Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference - Santo Domingo 2008

Santo Domingo 2008

Ms Peggy Cattan, President GSPCA, Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Bowen Louison, Agriculture Officer Carriacou, Mr. Bernard Macintyre and CVO St. Vincent, all attended the Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference in Santo Domingo from April 21 - 24, 2008.

The Conference drew 141 attendees from 28 islands or countries. Attendees represented 52 Caribbean-based organizations and 12 organizations from outside of the Caribbean. Twenty workshops on a wide range of animal welfare topics were held over the course of the three-day event.

Topics included, organizational development, disaster preparedness, animal welfare education, protection of marine species, alternatives to surgical sterilization, early spay / neuter, government role in humane animal control and so much more.

The three days were jammed packed with information and very interesting speakers. It was great to meet so many people from so many other similar organizations around the Caribbean. Our Hosts from the Dominican Republic were extremely gracious and took us on a tour the day after the Conference ended.

Peggy Cattan gave a spay / neuter presentation (click on volunteer vets to see a short version) and also a presentation on Grenada seeing the 2010 Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference will be held here sometime in April or May 2010.
