Carriacou Animal Hospital Opens

Carriacou Opens

Monday March 3, 2008 the Carriacou Animal Hospital opened for business with the help of Canadian Volunteer Vet, Dr. Lara Jamieson.

The GSPCA has leased a guesthouse called, "The Sand" on the airport road just a couple blocks south of Hillsboro. The location is perfect and with accommodations our volunteer vets will be able to stay right at the hospital.

This will be our temporary home until we can raise further funds to build a proper hospital and shelter. Government has offered us lands so we will be organizing infrastructure with them.

We have a bookstore and pet supplies set up at the clinic. We need volunteers from Carriacou to organize opening the clinic at least 3 mornings a week. Please e-mail me if you are interested.

Otherwise we will be open to the public when volunteer vets are available. Right now I have some volunteer Vets coming May, June and July. I believe we have another big spay/neuter clinic in the works for May.

For now I will be sending out e-mails to all in Carriacou when Vets are coming, dates, times etc. and you can use the coconut telegraph to spread the word. Kayak radio also agreed to announce when clinics will be held.

We are ordering cat traps, dog traps, travel kennels and other equipment needed for the many animals that do are not used to being held. This equipment can be used by anyone who cannot hold his or her animal. A deposit will be charged and returned when equipment is returned.

Mr. Bernard Macintyre, Agriculture Officer of Carriacou will be accompanying me in April to the Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference held in Santo Domingo. Here he will learn a lot about animal welfare, abuse, neglect etc. so I think this will help further our work in Carriacou.

Thanks to Kathy and Hans Lupke for retrieving all the boxes of equipment from the ferry and setting up the hospital. They did a great job, which made it all the more easier for the Vet and I to show up and get right to work.

Busy Waiting Room

Thanks to everyone who showed up to support us.
